Understanding What Happens to Your Data


Since May 25, 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has been in effect in the European Union. Its goal is both simple and ambitious: to protect personal data and make its use more transparent. For development and operations teams, this means thinking "privacy by design" and "privacy by default" when writing code, configuring services, and managing logs.



What is personal data?


Personal data is any information that can be used to identify, directly or indirectly, a natural person. This can include a name, postal or email address, but also technical elements such as an IP address, session identifiers, location, device identifiers, or browsing logs. These elements, alone or combined, can reveal much more about an individual than expected; Hence the requirement for proportionality and minimization in applications and data pipelines.
